Chapter Eight

“Joslyn, what’s this?”

Joslyn looked up from organizing the closet to see the scroll in Peter’s hand. She was so tired she felt that her sockets would swallow her eyes, but she couldn’t sleep. “The scroll.”

“What are you doing with it?” His voice was tight with anger.

“I’m keeping it in a safe place until I can be sure Sam won’t sell it on the black market.”

“You have no right to this.”

Impatient, Joslyn turned to stare at her husband. “I’ve already told you how Sam was acting in Egypt. After everything I have been through to translate this scroll, do you really think I would leave it with someone I can’t trust?”

“You promised a week. After a week, you’d be done with this scroll.”

“I am.” She carefully lined up her shoes in the closet. White first. Smallest heel to tallest. Next comes beige then tan. She placed a navy pair next to the tan and cocked her head sideways in consideration. Sam’s face intruded in her thoughts. She blinked to dispel his image and determinedly set another set of shoes next to the last pair.

Peter waved the scroll under her nose. “Then why is it here?”

She grabbed the intrusive object, careful not to damage it. “For safe keeping. I am not working on it. I wasn’t even thinking about it until you brought it up. Come tomorrow morning, I will take it down to the bank and put it in a safe deposit box until I can contact the proper authorities.”

“You’re turning yourself in?”

“Don’t be an idiot.” Silence greeted her outburst. She had vowed not to let her work ruin her marriage and here she was snapping at Peter. With a sigh, she turned to him. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to snarl at you.” Unwanted tears pooled in her eyes. “Oh, God, Peter...what am I going to do?”

His arms encircled her. She grasped him tightly to her as deep sobs fought their way out.

Sam squinted in the midday sun. Heat wafted off the arid soil beneath his feet. While he much preferred the air-conditioned climate of the Jeep, he was anxious to see Hatchepsut’s tomb. Something waited for him there. Something he’d wanted for a very long time. Ali spoke rapidly to their guide. Ali was unaware of Sam’s fluency in the Bedouian dialect they used.

“It is just over that ridge. When you reach the curve on the other side of that mountain, you will have to stop your truck and look to your left. There is a rock shaped like the head of Bastet. Behind this, you will find the entrance of the place you seek.” The man looked everywhere but in Ali’s eyes.

“You are not coming with us?” Ali asked.

“No.” The robed man shook his head. “This is as far as I go. May Allah protect you.”

“Why not?” Annoyance colored Ali’s voice.

“It is a place full of demons. People go and never return. No matter the riches stories say you can find there, I would never go closer than here.
